You must have heard about the name Bermuda Triangle Disappearances, The Mysterious Bermuda Triangle incidents or The Devil’s Triangle. We will be learning about the same in this article in a very easy and interesting way.
Bermuda Triangle is an area located in the western part of the North Atlantic Ocean roughly denoted by three points which are Miami, Bermuda, and Puerto Rico. It covers roughly 1,295,000 to 3,910,000 square kilometers of the North Atlantic Ocean.
It contains a number of unresolved mysteries in which ships, aircraft, and people disappeared mysteriously. As per an estimate, 50 ships and 20 airplanes disappeared mysteriously.
Till today many explanations and theories have been given about this, but the fact is no one knows what is the reality.
The Very first recorded mysterious incident was in 1945 July 10th when Thomas Arthur Garner, AMM3, USN along with eleven other crew members mysteriously vanished in the Bermuda Triangle in a US Navy petrol seaplane.
The Most recent incident happened in 2017 May 15th when a private Aircraft (MU-2B) vanished from radar and lost contact with air traffic control in Miami all of a sudden in the middle of the air at a height of 24000 feet and the remains of the aircraft were discovered later.
Well-known Incidents from The Bermuda Triangle Disappearances.
The Flight 19 – 1945
One of the most known incidents of the Bermuda Triangle is The Flight 19. It was on December 5th, 1945 around 2:10 pm when Five TBM Avenger torpedo bombers took off as a usual routine training flight from Naval Air Station in Ft. Lauderdale. The plan was simple to head east from the Florida coast and carry out bombing exercises at a location called Hens and Chickens Shoals afterwards they were supposed to turn north and continue their course over Grand Bahama Island then in the southwest direction to their base.
The flight’s leader was Lieutenant Charles C. Taylor a highly experienced pilot and each Avenger had three Navy or Marines except one which had a crew of two people, 14 in total.
Everything was going well and after completing the first part of the training and while heading to the next all of a sudden Lieutenant Charles reported over the radio that “He reported that both of his compasses are malfunctioning and he was over a broken land was trying to find Fort Lauderdale “
Along with that, the weather conditions were worsening. Only after a few hours radio tower lost contact with all of them no one had a slight clue what happened or where they went, in search of Flight 19 a search and rescue Mariner aircraft took off with a crew of 13 people but it got lost too. Till date, we have yet to find out about this mysterious incident.
USS Cyclops – 1910
You must have heard about the Disappearance of the USS Cyclops. It was built in 1910 and was one of the largest navy ship of that time.
It was during World War 1 in 1918, the USS Cyclops set sail from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Baltimore, USA, and was supposed to make a stop at Barbados. The colliers (Colliers were coal-carrying ships that were used to transport coal for fuel purposes to other ships) contained 309 people onboard. The ship was under the command of Lieutenant Commander George W. Worley. It was carrying 10,000 to 11,000 tons of manganese ore which was beyond its carrying capacity as per some port officials.
At first, the commander reported about the cracked cylinder which could no longer function and resulted in reducing the speed and performance of the colliers. The USS Cyclops made an urgent stop at Bahia for further maintenance and repair before heading to its destination. After providing supplies and refueling at Barbados, it headed to its destination but afterward, the ship and crew members vanished in a mysterious way. Even though the last communication received from the ship was about the weather conditions, it was “Weather Fair, All Well”.
Till today we have yet to resolve this mystery, not even a single sign has been discovered.
Theories Behind the Bermuda Triangle Disappearances. Fact or fiction?
Navigation Mistakes and Human Error:
The Bermuda Triangle is widely known for its extreme weather conditions and unexpected formation of storms. Which leads to navigational mistakes, and equipment failures. This area has been heavily traveled for many years, so human error in high traffic can also cause accidents.
Magnetic Disturbances:
According to a few theories magnetism behaves abnormally in the Bermuda Triangle which could interfere with navigational instruments and cause confusion and disorientation among the sailors and pilots. It’s just a theory, till today there is not any hard evidence or scientific proof as per the studies about that.
Methane Hydrate Explosions:
Another theory talks about the existence of pockets of methane hydrates in ice-like structures at the bottom of the sea in the Bermuda Triangle. It’s a form of natural gas that is stable at low temperatures and high pressure. These Methane Hydrates could be released when temperatures or pressure changes and create bubbles resulting in a reduction of water density. Also, the sudden release of methane gas could potentially lead to explosions which can cause damage to ships and if such an incident occurs under an aircraft, it can lead the aircraft to crash into the ocean.
Underwater City of Atlantis:
As per the Atlantis theory the Lost City of Atlantis, which was an ancient civilization might be located in the Bermuda Triangle. About Atlantis Plato who is an ancient Greek Philosopher mentioned in his dialogues in Timaeus and Critias. And it is believed that their advanced technology is the reason behind the disappearance of the ships and Aircraft. But this theory is just a theory due to a lack of archaeological evidence.
Time Warps and Vortexes:
According to this theory the area of the Bermuda Triangle has the ability to make time travel possible. In simple words, its unusual gravitational forces and energy fields act like portals that transport ships and aircraft to different timelines or different dimensions. The region of the Bermuda Triangle has the presence of time warps or vortexes. This theory again lacks scientific evidence. On a different note, the idea of time dilation exists in theoretical physics but the conditions which are required are typically extreme and not found in the Bermuda Triangle.

Many theories have been proposed regarding this but till now no one knows what the truth is. Flight 19 or USS Cyclops has forced us to think about how a ship or plane with advanced technology can disappear without any proof. Till today, many books have been written or movies have been made on the basis of these incidents, which have given us the opportunity to learn more about them. But the truth is still hidden and will we ever know the truth?
